Poem: The Premise

The Premise

that it will get better
 if we do the things
to deal with the problems
you want us to fix
is faulty.  The problems
that matter
are not the ones
that we can address.
Fixing them
will do nothing
to make us happier
or improve
the real issue
and your insistence
just makes it harder.
Admit the damage
that has been done
and tell us
you understand
and things might change,
but it won't make it better.
Nothing that can be fixed
can repair the real damage,
but if you accept that,
if you admit
that the harm is real,
maybe it will help.
I know it can't stay this way,
but I don't want to do anything
that you will pretend
is changing it for the better
and not just what is necessary
despite  the reality
that it will only fix and not repair.
