Poem: She says she cares

She says she cares

but it is not the truth,
or not the caring it seems,
is nothing for anyone else,
is just a fear
of what might come,
of turning tables
and dispositions,
the nature of things
being revealed.
She does not wish to help
or make it different
or protect anyone
besides herself.
She only knows
there is a warning
in what is done
to others.
That is all.
She does not care.
It is not
an intercession
or act of kindness.
She is preparing,
is deciding
what must be done
for her own well-being.
None of the rest matters.
We can all suffer
as long
as it is only us.
