Poem: I was responsible

I was responsible

I think it was the way to be
given circumstances.
I could have shirked.  I did not.
You act as though
I did nothing, or nothing right,
but I could have left altogether.
I could have chosen
to care for myself alone
and not be there to help.
It is the choice I could have made.
