Poem: We Buried The Bird Who We Found in The Pool

We Buried The Bird Who We Found in The Pool

Melissa wrapped it
in the palm leaf
that floated there
beside it.  At first,
I did not see
it was a bird,
only the darkness,
the feathers floating,
a small lump of debris,
but then, small detail
of its reaching feet,
the beak, the open eye.
It is buried now,
has left the sky,
has been laid
within the earth.
