A Writer's Notebook, Day Two-Hundred-And-Twenty-Seven
Today has been another truly productive writing day. I have four new poems, and I am also starting work on a piece of fiction that I think may have some promise. I am not really certain where it is going, but I had the idea and I realized that I should just take action with it, as I would with a new poem. I think that is the real key, and I am going to try to keep it in mind that I must take my ideas seriously in these ways.
I think of the idea that beginning a thing is a magical act, as well. I mean by this that I feel the act of starting the project so immediately upon thinking it up imbues it with a certain power. In part, it is the urgent energy, but it is also that taking action is the way of showing that the idea is being taken seriously. By beginning to write, I am showing a commitment to the work and to the inspiration. I am hoping that attitude will help me gain the kind of prolific pace I believe I could be capable of. Honestly, if I were to spend my day entirely just writing poems, I would probably be several books deep right now, and I am sure that I can spread that energy into several medium without a great deal of difficulty. It is merely a matter of working up to it.
The fact is, I am attempting to become a mature and dedicated writer, someone who is working hard on a regular basis, and these are not easy things for me to accomplish. I have spent many years being a bit distant from my work, and I am finally rekindling something. I feel very glad for that.
Tonight, also, I went to a really wonderful event at th Morikami Museum which featured poet Brynn Saito discussing the zuihitsu form. Those who have been reading this blog for the past few months may recall that I used the exercise of writing zuihitsu as a sort of rehabilitation of my poetic sensibilities when I first ventured to write poems each day. I actually wrote two new zuihitsu today, and really find the form interesting in ways that I will need to explore more deeply.
